Eczema vs. Psoriasis: How to Tell the Difference
They both cause red, itchy patches of skin, but eczema and psoriasis are different conditions. A dermatologist explains the key distinctions.
It can be difficult for a patient to distinguish between eczema (atopic dermatitis) and psoriasis, as both can cause red, itchy, and inflamed skin. However, a dermatologist can diagnose them based on key differences. **The Itch:** - **Eczema:** The itch is often intense and can precede the rash. Scratching can make the skin raw and weepy. - **Psoriasis:** The itch is typically milder, but patients might also feel a burning or stinging sensation. **The Appearance:** - **Eczema:** Tends to be weepy and crusty. In adults, it often appears in the crooks of the elbows and knees. - **Psoriasis:** The rash is typically well-defined, thick, red plaques with silvery-white scales. It commonly appears on the elbows, knees, scalp, and lower back. **The Cause:** - **Eczema:** Often linked to allergies and an overactive immune response to environmental triggers like dust mites or certain foods. - **Psoriasis:** An autoimmune condition where the body's skin cell production goes into overdrive. While there is no cure for either, both conditions can be effectively managed with the right treatment plan, which is why an accurate diagnosis from a dermatologist is essential.
