Knee Pain: When to Rest and When to See a Doctor
Most minor knee pain can be managed at home, but some symptoms are red flags that warrant a visit to an orthopedic specialist.
Knee pain is an incredibly common complaint. For minor aches and pains from overuse, the R.I.C.E. method (Rest, Ice, Compression, Elevation) is often effective. However, you should book an appointment with an orthopedic specialist if you experience any of the following: - **Inability to bear weight:** If you can't put your full weight on the knee. - **Severe swelling:** Significant, immediate swelling after an injury. - **A 'pop' sound:** If you heard a popping noise at the time of injury, it could indicate a torn ligament (like the ACL). - **Instability:** A feeling that your knee is 'giving out' or won't support you. - **Locking or catching:** If the knee joint gets stuck in one position. - **Obvious deformity:** If the knee or leg looks misshapen. - **Pain that doesn't improve:** If pain persists for more than a week despite home care. Ignoring these signs can lead to further damage and more complex problems down the line. An accurate diagnosis is the first step to a proper recovery.
