That Stabbing Heel Pain: What is Plantar Fasciitis?
Do you feel a sharp, stabbing pain in your heel with your first steps in the morning? You may have plantar fasciitis.
Plantar fasciitis is one of the most common causes of heel pain. It involves inflammation of the plantar fascia, a thick band of tissue that runs across the bottom of your foot and connects your heel bone to your toes. The classic symptom is a stabbing pain in the bottom of your foot near the heel, which is usually worst with the first few steps after waking up. It can also be triggered by long periods of standing or getting up after sitting. **Common Risk Factors:** - **Age:** It's most common between the ages of 40 and 60. - **Certain types of exercise:** Activities that place a lot of stress on your heel, like long-distance running or ballet dancing. - **Foot mechanics:** Having flat feet, a high arch, or an abnormal pattern of walking. - **Obesity:** Excess weight puts extra stress on your plantar fascia. **Treatment** typically involves rest, ice, and specific stretching exercises. Our orthopedic specialist might also recommend supportive shoes, custom orthotics, or in some cases, corticosteroid injections to reduce inflammation.
