Hindi Medical Phrase Card — For Indian Travelers

Show This Card — No Translation App Needed

Most Nepali healthcare workers speak some English, but in an emergency — or in a rural health post — a printed phrase card in Hindi works better than pointing at a phone. Print this card, fold it, keep it in your first aid kit.

Hindi in the Nepali Context

Hindi is the language of Bollywood — the films that dominate Nepali entertainment — and of India, the neighbor whose influence permeates Nepali commerce and culture. Many Nepalis understand Hindi passively; the educated speak it. But Nepali is the language of Nepal — the Hindi speaker should not assume equivalence.

Is Hindi useful in Nepal?

Partially — Hindi is understood by many Nepalis through Bollywood films and proximity to India, but Nepali is the national language and the primary spoken language. In tourist areas, English works; in villages, Nepali. Hindi is a useful bridge for Indian travelers and for regions near the Indian border.

What is the difference between Nepali and Hindi?

Related but distinct — both are Indo-Aryan languages sharing Devanagari script and much vocabulary, but grammar and pronunciation differ. A Hindi speaker can often understand basic Nepali; the languages are mutually intelligible to a degree but not identical.

What phrases are most useful?

Greetings (Namaste — hello/goodbye), politeness (Dhanyabad — thank you), practical phrases (Tapai ko naam ke ho — what is your name?), numbers for bargaining, and emergency phrases (Malai doctor chahiyo — I need a doctor). The basics get you further than perfect grammar.

Do Nepalis speak English?

In tourist areas and among younger, educated Nepalis — yes, widely. In rural areas, less so; older generations and remote communities may have minimal English. The tourist infrastructure (hotels, restaurants, guides) operates in English; the village encounter may not.

How do I handle the language barrier?

Learn key Nepali phrases (the effort is appreciated), use translation apps for complex needs, rely on guides for trekking communication, and remember that nonverbal communication works — pointing, gestures, smiles transcend language. The Nepali people are patient with language learners.
