Lost or Stolen? — Recovery Steps That Actually Work in Kathmandu

Breathe — This Happens Daily & Is Fixable

Tourists lose passports, meds, wallets, and insurance cards every week in Thamel. Most are recoverable or replaceable within 24–48h. Start with the relevant section below — and for medical documents, we can re-issue yours free regardless of what you lost.

Lost Passport

  1. File a police report at the Tourist Police station (Thamel: +977-1-4247041) — you'll need the report number
  2. Contact your embassy (US: +977-1-4234000 · UK: +977-1-4237100 · Australia: +977-1-4371678) — they issue emergency travel documents
  3. Get passport photos at any Thamel photo studio (~NPR 200 for 4)
  4. Bring photocopies/photos of your lost passport if you have them — speeds embassy processing significantly

Lost Medications

  1. We can re-prescribe most maintenance medications from our verified pharmacy — bring a photo of the original packaging if you have it
  2. For controlled substances (opioids, benzodiazepines, strong ADHD meds) — a police report + home prescription evidence is usually needed
  3. A photo of your prescription saves days — keep one in cloud storage before travel

Lost Insurance Documents

  1. All policy documents are retrievable from your insurer's website/app or by calling their assistance line
  2. Your booking reference (TC-…) works as proof of visit — we can re-issue your medical packet anytime, free
  3. If claiming later: our emailed PDF receipt survives even if paper copies are lost

Lost Wallet / Cards

  1. Block cards via your bank's international line immediately
  2. Western Union/MoneyGram can receive emergency cash transfers — Thamel has multiple agents
  3. File a tourist police report for anything theft-related — insurers need it for claims
  4. eSewa/Fonepay QR payments work at our clinic if your physical wallet is gone

Prevention: Do This BEFORE You Lose Anything

  • Phone photos of: passport bio page, visa page, insurance policy, prescriptions, credit cards (front only)
  • Store them in cloud storage (Google Drive/Photos) — not just your phone which can also be lost
  • Email a copy to yourself and one trusted person at home
  • Keep a paper copy of your passport separate from the actual passport
  • Write down your bank's international collect-call number before traveling

The Theft That Strands You

The stolen passport mid-trek is not an inconvenience — it is a crisis. The emergency travel document takes days at the embassy in Kathmandu; the trek is over; the itinerary collapses. The prevention is the discipline that feels paranoid until it saves you: passport in hotel safe or money belt, never in the backpack that leaves your sight, never in the pocket that can be picked.

Theft prevention discipline

  • Passport — hotel safe or money belt on body; never in backpack
  • Cash split — cards and money in multiple locations
  • Phone backup — written copies of critical numbers, insurance info, itinerary
  • Teahouse security — lock your pack, keep valuables with you
  • Police report — mandatory for insurance claims; get it immediately

The Embassy Process

The lost passport emergency is solvable but slow — police report, embassy application, emergency travel document issuance, possible visa complications, then travel. It takes days in Kathmandu and means the trek is interrupted or ended. The embassy can get you home; it cannot get your trek back. The prevention is the protection.

The Passport Replacement

Lost or stolen passport: report to the police (the police report for the documentation), then the embassy or consulate for the emergency travel document. The passport replacement requires the identification documentation, the photographs, and the processing time — typically days in Kathmandu for the emergency passport.

The Card Cancellation

If cards are stolen — the immediate card cancellation (the international collect call or the bank's emergency line), the money transfer for the funds (the Western Union or the bank wire if the cards are gone), and the embassy contact if the situation is severe. For the traveler without the passport or the cards, the embassy's assistance is the recovery path.

The Immediate Actions

Lost/stolen documents: report to the local police (the tourist police in Thamel), contact the embassy (the passport replacement or the emergency travel document), and the insurance notification. For the passport that is lost, the emergency travel document that allows the exit.

The Financial Backup

Lost card/cash backup: the card blocking (the immediate call to the bank), the backup card that is kept separately, the Western Union for the emergency funds, and the insurance that covers the theft. For the traveler who loses the funds, the backup plan that is prepared before the trip.

The Replacement Steps

Document replacement: the passport (the embassy report then the replacement), the cards (the bank that is notified), the insurance (the claim that documents the theft), and the police report (the official record that is needed).

The Cash Reserve

For the theft that steals the valuables — the backup cash that is hidden separately (the secondary location that is not with the primary wallet).

The Document Priority

Lost document priority — the passport (the most critical), the cards (the bank that is notified), the insurance (the claim that documents). For the lost document, the replacement that is initiated.

The Prevention

Lost document prevention — the backup (the copy that is kept separately, the digital that is stored), the secure carrying (the hidden pouch), and the awareness that is maintained.

The Document

The Prevention

What should I do if my passport is lost or stolen?

Report to police immediately (get a written report for insurance), contact your embassy for emergency travel documents, and cancel any pending travel. The process takes days — the embassy issues emergency documents, you may need a new visa, and the trek is paused. Prevent it: hotel safe or money belt, never in your backpack.

What about stolen money or cards?

Cancel cards immediately (call the number on the back — have it written down separately), file a police report for insurance, and access emergency cash (Western Union, embassy assistance, or the cash you hopefully split across bags). The all-in-one-wallet traveler is one theft from crisis; the split-stash traveler has options.

What if my phone is stolen?

Use Find My Device/iPhone to locate or remote-wipe immediately, change passwords on accounts accessible from the phone, file a police report, and get a local SIM for a replacement device. Your contacts, itinerary, and insurance info are in that phone — the replacement needs what the original had.

How do I prevent theft on trek?

Teahouse rooms are not secure — keep valuables on your person (money belt) or in a locked pack (bring a small lock). Do not leave electronics visible or unattended. The theft that happens is usually opportunistic — the visible phone, the unattended pack, the careless moment. The discipline is not trusting the social environment completely.

What does my insurance cover for theft?

Most travel insurance covers theft with a police report — the report is mandatory for claims. Document the loss immediately (photos, receipts if possible, police report number). Insurance covers items, not cash usually — the cash replacement is your problem. The prevention (split stashes, secure storage) is better than the claim.
